Risk & Issue Mitigation

Find the risk before it finds the plan. I run risk logs as living control systems — owners, due dates, and triggers — so risks convert to actions, not anxiety.

The Workflow — How I Approach It

1

Identify risks early

Brainstorm with the team and mine the data — the risk list is built before it’s needed.

2

Assess likelihood and impact

Rank risks by what they would actually do to the plan — not by how loud they are.

3

Assign owners and triggers

Every risk gets a named owner and a defined trigger — no orphan risks.

4

Build mitigation plans

A plan for what we do if it hits — decided while calm, executed under pressure.

5

Review weekly, not monthly

The log is a working tool — reviewed every week, updated every time something changes.

6

Escalate what matters

Escalate early and with options — leadership never hears about a risk for the first time at the deadline.

My Operating View — The 2 Cents

Risk management fails when the log is a museum. My 2 cents: a risk without an owner and a due date isn’t a risk — it’s a wish. Reviewed weekly, a risk log converts uncertainty into a short list of managed actions.

What Worked & What Didn’t

What Worked

  • Living risk logs with owners and due dates — risks became actions.
  • Weekly review — nothing surfaced at the deadline as a surprise.

What Didn’t

  • Risk logs that recorded history — filled once, read never.
  • Reviews that happened only at project end — too late to matter.
