Value Stream Mapping

You can’t fix a flow you can’t see. I map the value stream end-to-end — every step, wait, and handoff — to find where value stops. That’s how cycle times fell 30% in logistics.

The Workflow — How I Approach It

1

Walk the real process

Observe what actually happens — not what the process map claims happens.

2

Draw every step, wait, and handoff

Capture the full flow including the invisible waits between steps.

3

Mark value-add vs. non-value-add

Separate what the customer pays for from what the process tolerates.

4

Find the bottleneck and the waits

Locate where work stacks — that is the constraint to break.

5

Design the future state

Map the target flow with the waste removed — realistic, not idealistic.

6

Implement and re-measure

Execute the change and measure the same metrics — proof, not assertion.

My Operating View — The 2 Cents

The map is the diagnosis. My 2 cents: wait times and handoffs are where cycle time hides — if you only look at steps, you’ll fix the wrong thing. The gap between value-added time and total time is the opportunity.

What Worked & What Didn’t

What Worked

  • Mapping that exposed the waits — 30% cycle-time reduction.
  • Future-state design that was realistic enough to implement.

What Didn’t

  • Mapping the documented process — the diagram was fiction.
  • Ignoring waits — optimizing steps while value sat idle.
